Military Discounts for Spring Break Vacations

The weather is (slowly) starting to warm up and with the kids getting some time off school and everyone seeking a little vacay, Spring Break is the perfect time to get away. As a military family, you don’t have to spend a lot to enjoy spring break this year. Here, we’ve outlined some of the best military vacation discounts to take advantage of, as well as some vacation ideas to get your creativity going

Military Discounts for Spring Break

Below are some of our favorite ways to save on your next vacation, including discounts on all-inclusive beach resorts, cruises, amusement parks, and more:

Save on a Couples Retreat

If your dream Spring Break includes lounging on a white sand beach with the sea breeze in your hair, a Sandals Resort vacation could be the perfect getaway. Sandals offers 10% off for military members, firefighters, police officers, and Federal Emergency Management Agency members, in addition to the many promotions they often run. Choose to feel the sand between your toes in luxurious island destinations like Antigua, the Bahamas, Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica, or St. Lucia. Plus, everything is included in your price so you don’t have to worry about additional charges adding up.

Get Outside

Spring Break is the perfect time to get outside. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and all National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands are free to military families. Yes, you read that right. Current U.S. military members and dependents in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard, as well as Reserve and National Guard members, can all receive a free annual pass to visit the many National Parks around the country. Just visit one of the many Federal Recreation Areas to receive your pass. Visit the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Zion National Park, and many, many more all free of charge.

Learn Something New

Just because it’s Spring Break doesn’t mean you can learn something new! There are plenty of museums, theaters, and aquariums around the country that offer military discounts so you and the kids can enjoy a new adventure. The National Aquarium in Baltimore offers discounted tickets for guests with an active military ID and they also partner with local MWR or ITT offices to offer consignment tickets at the lowest price possible. These rates are available for active duty reserves and retired members of the military.
But don’t let the learning stop there! Theatre Communications Group has partnered with Blue Star Families, a military community organization, to bring you and your family complementary and discounted live theater tickets to more than 167 participating theaters. Find a theater near you here.

Have Some Fun

There are many amusement parks, including Disneyland, Great Wolf Lodge, LEGOLAND, and Knott’s Berry Farm, that offer military discounts for Spring Break visitors. For example, Sea World offers one complimentary ticket a year, MWR/ITT offices offer discounted Six Flags tickets, and Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida offers an exclusive military vacation package that includes 3-nights of hotel accommodations, a 1-day park-to-park ticket with 2 days free, early park admission to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and access to select live entertainment venues at Universal CityWalk.

Spring Break Tips and Tricks

Now that you know all about some of the best fun and affordable vacations, we wanted to also share some tips and tricks when traveling during this busy time.
  • If possible, book your flights and hotels as soon as possible. The closer Spring Break gets, the more prices will go up.
  • Have a budget before you go and stick with it. It may be tempting to want to purchase upgrades, souvenirs, and other extras along the way but if you establish your budget beforehand, you’re less likely to overspend.
  • Bring the essentials, such as sunblock, swim diapers (required at many resorts and on most cruise ships), toothpaste and other toiletries before you go so you don’t have to pay a premium for these items at your destination.
  • If you’re going on a longer vacation, have someone check up on your house while you’re gone. One of the great things about living in a military community like those at Lincoln Military Housing is that you have a network of friends and neighbors to look after your home.
  • Try to travel on less popular days to save even more money. According to FareCompare, weekend fares rise in April (which is usually around Spring Break) and cost about 40% more than weekday flights.
Military families are eligible for many money-saving benefits, from college scholarships to hotel deals, so take advantage of these savings for Spring Break 2019. Not sure where to go? Our quiz below can help you determine your dream vacation!

The Best Cinco de Mayo Recipes

Looking for the best Cinco de Mayo recipes? I have rounded up my favorites for you! Let’s start with a quick history lesson. Don’t confuse Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day – that’s on September 16th. Cinco de Mayo commemorates May 5, 1862, the date that the Mexican Army had an unlikely victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla. The Mexicans were outnumbered, and the French Army was better equipped, but the Mexicans were victorious. This was a major victory that lifted the spirits and patriotism of the Mexican people and  added strength to the resistance movement. Some people have argued that if the Mexicans didn’t defeat the French in the Battle of Puebla, that the French might have fought with the Confederacy in the American Civil War and which may have led to a different outcome. So… maybe it isn’t so silly that Cinco de Mayo tends to be more celebrated in America than Mexico. The Best Cinco de Mayo Recipes: Now that we have a little more context, here are my favorite
